Purple Route – Journey to the Past

Purple Route – Journey to the Past

A simple, circular urban route to discover the most emblematic historic and heritage sites of Sant Cugat.

HOME · Plaça de l'Om

The tour begins at Plaça de l'Om, where you will find the entrance to the Monastery Museum (Monastery Cloister), the first stop on the route.

MUSEUM OF THE MONASTERY - MONASTERY CLOISTER

Located in the cloister of the Monastery, the museum offers a journey through the history of the monastic complex and the daily life of the Benedictine monks. Its permanent exhibition incorporates models, interactive elements and audiovisual displays to discover the evolution of the Monastery over the centuries.

Cross Plaça de l'Om and Plaça d'Octavià to head up Carrer de l'Hospital.

Turn right onto Carrer de Sant Bartomeu, cross Plaça de Pep Ventura and continue along Carrer de Santa Anna until you reach the roundabout in front of Can Vernet Park.

Cross the roundabout towards the park, which is next to the health centre. Cross Can Vernet Park heading north-east until you reach the Can Vernet bridge.

CAN VERNET BRIDGE

This 14th-century Gothic aqueduct, built with stone from Campanyà, was part of the water supply system for Sant Cugat. It carried water from the Monks' Quarry at Can Volpelleres to the Abbey Palace and the old town.

Cross the bridge and continue to Calle de la Mina. Go up the street westwards until you reach Calle d'Estapé.

Turn right and continue straight on until you reach the junction with Calle d'Alfons d'Aragó. Cross the level crossing and continue northwards to Calle de Víctor Català.

Continue along Carrer Víctor Català to Avinguda Can Graells, where you will need to turn left. After a few metres, on the right, you will find the rear entrance to Mercantic.

MERCANTIC

Located in a former ceramics factory, Mercantic is a complex dedicated to antiques, art and creativity. Its spaces are home to antiques dealers, artisans, restaurateurs and artists, as well as offering a varied range of gastronomic options and cultural activities.

Begin your return journey at the main entrance to Mercantic and head down Avinguda Rius i Taulet towards the city centre.

Continue to the junction with Lluís Companys i Jover Avenue, where you will need to turn slightly to the left to take Catalunya Avenue.

Go straight on until you reach St Peter's Square and continue along Major Street, where you will find the medieval arcades, the final stop on the route.

THE ARCHWAYS OF MAJOR STREET

This set of porches and arcades, of medieval origin, is one of the most representative testaments to historic Sant Cugat. In the past, the arches protected the market activity and hosted the meetings of the Town Council, which were documented in this space in 1416.

Continue along Carrer Major towards the Monastery until you return to Plaça d'Octavià, the end point of this circular route.
